Dragon Flies in the Studio

A good friend of mine, photographer Gordan Hardcastle, caught some dragon flies for me since he knows I like macro and cool wings. I’ve never even touched dragon flies before, so this was a big thing for me. My husband assured me they would not bite, so I forced myself to be brave. Turned out they were quite endearing and very entertaining! So here is just a fun little adventure with some commentary on my dragon fly shoot :) Behind the scenes photo facts for interested photographers at the end.

Funny little alien on planet earth.

My happy little friend! See the big smile?

That's a jute string he's hanging onto. I love how the wings turned blue when given a boost in saturation.

This guy liked to hold his wings different than the others. Guess it's just his style. Works for me!

"So did you hear the one about..." I swear it looks like he's telling a joke! Notice he has dirt all over his face. And he's smiling!

Instead of finishing his joke, he realized he had a messy face and proceeded to wash it.

It was this flash when he realized something was going on, and he was stunned! Jumped the next couple of flashes. That's it! His turn in the spotlight is over! Next?

Look at those big bug brown eyes! Isn't that the cutest face you ever saw?

"I am the ferocious King of the Dragon Flies! Beware!" Can you see that snarl on his face?

"Just kidding! So did you hear the one about...."

Another little friend, and further proof of my bravery :)

PHOTO FACTS: All but one of these was taken with the Canon 100MM 2.8 Macro lens. The one of the dragon fly shot from above, with the big brown eyes was shot with a Canon 24-70 2.8L at 70mm. Two strobes were used. Backlight was camera left with a softbox and grid, and the front light with a spot grid, bounced into a white reflector and then onto the bug. All shot between f/5.6 and f/11.
