Ever since the latest scare about jerky treats killing our dogs, ( http://tinyurl.com/pfwtgvg ), and since I couldn’t pronounce most of what the ingredients were on all the treats our pets were getting anyway (they’re spoiled), I decided to try making their treats from scratch. I found several recipes online, and even looked at cracker recipes for people. I’ve made several batches of various recipes over the last few days and my furry taste testers have enjoyed every minute! Well, we’ve come up with a winner that they LOVE (look at those eager faces!), and they’re simple to make so I can easier commit to keeping this up. It took a combination of several recipes but these are not only tasty, they are healthy!
PUMPKIN CRACKERS (for dogs)
1/2 cup pumpkin
4 Tbl honey
4 Tbl water
2 tsp bouillon
2 Tbl olive oil
2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup ground flax seed
Combine pumpkin, oil, and honey. Dissolve the bouillon in water and add to pumpkin mix. Stir in the flax. Add flour. Mixture will be thick. Divide dough into 2, and roll out onto 2 greased cookie sheets until 1/8″ thin. Cut into squares with knife or pizza cutter. Bake at 350* for 20-25 minutes.
PS – I did learn from researching dog treats that honey is good for dogs (not puppies), and that onions (that includes garlic) is not. Everyone probably knows that chocolate isn’t good for dogs either.
PSS- I plan on making a bunch of these and freezing them for convenience and to better use up that open can of pumpkin.
